Road Racing begins in Earnest

As Spring has decided to delay its full arrival this year, the racing season had to start in earnest, with the first May Bank Holiday weekend kick starting the region’s racing programme.

Sunday 5th May saw the Iceni Velo club road race take place at the Stoke Holy Cross circuit, with the notorious Skeets Hill finish. No Diss CC riders were present in the race, however there was good showings form the local club riders finishing behind international Tri-athlete Joe Skipper taking victory.

As for the Ixworth Crits on Monday 6th and the first round of the Lotus League races, here are the words of Simon Harrison (Club Membership Secretary).

“Two Diss jerseys on show at Ixworth Crits this year with yours truly and Stephen James Hubbard on duty in the Masters 50+ race off at 1.30. A much colder day than last year but at least dry and a fiend of about 18 or 19 plus the Women’s Race amongst us. Open to all categories the race predictably split up with the strongest getting away. The impressive winner was alone over a lap ahead I think with the Women’s winner in tow. 11th and 15th(?) I think with our 2nd Claim Member Kevin Hickman in 10th for API Metro. Thanks must go to those who came and supported with shouts of encouragement and real time Coaching Mick Madgett Angela Long Steve, Graham Trudgill, Andy Smith, Andrew Daniels and Dave Wilby – all much appreciated.

Last night we three headed up to Lotus for another go. Dry but cold and clockwise this year. About 50 minutes of racing including a neutral section as we nearly caught the main race that had started half a lap ahead. About 25mph average and a field of around 50 of 4ths and 3rds battled it out with the typical bunch sprint/mass chaos for the line. I can’t add the Results in this post but perhaps Ken Jolliffe can post both sets for Monday and last night?
We’ll try and keep up with the reports over the summer. We’re next out Tuesday next at Lotus and gearing up for the Club Road Race on the 26th.”
